Our Original Plan/What we Ended up Doing...
For our group's passion project, our original plan was to put a twist on a classic bake sale. Rather than selling our treats for money, we wanted to spread some positivity by having our customers compliment themselves or say something they love about themselves as payment for the treat. We wanted to do this to help remind everyone of their self worth and the things that make them love themselves. In our society today, it is frowned upon or seen as egotistical to acknowledge physical features or traits that we admire about ourselves. By giving out treats and having people compliment themselves, they’re practicing self-love and are not only given an opportunity to appreciate the parts of them that they love but also say these traits or characteristics out loud. We hope that sometime in the future, someone is able to take our ideas and pick up on this project to spread self-love and positivity to others.

Due to the current situation going on in the world, we decided to shift our ideas and spread positivity through a website. We want to inform others of the appearance bias and encourage conversations with friends and family that may be affected by the appearance bias. The appearance bias is the idea that everyone is meant to look a certain way or have specific physical traits that are seen as more desirable. Realistically, not everyone is going to have these traits. This is why the appearance bias is so negative and harmful. For example, Brandy Melville, the well-known clothing store that sells one size fits all clothing. They cater toward individuals that are tall, thin, and typically white. They’re discriminant toward people that don’t fit these unrealistic descriptions. Stores like this are not encouraging toward uniqueness and present a strict unrealistic measure of what beauty is. Our group is working on drafting an email to send to Brandy Melville directly.
